Trex has received numerous honors already this year, but none mean as much as being named the “greenest” composite decking manufacturer in the industry. Today, on the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, that designation becomes more meaningful.

For the fourth straight year, Trex took top honors this month in the decking products category of Green Builder Media 2015 Readers' Choice Awards. More than 34% of readers who voted selected Trex decking as the most eco-friendly in the industry.

Trex was built on eco-friendly principles and values. We were the first environmentally responsible choice for composite deck owners upon our founding in 1996.

As the largest polyethylene plastic recycler in the nation, Trex annually turns more than 1.5 billion recycled plastic bags – as well as other household plastics such as newspaper sleeves and sandwich bags – into outdoor living products. We keep more than 400 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills each year.

Our production method is uniquely eco-friendly as well. It eliminates the use of smoke stacks, doesn’t create factory runoff, and Trex’s trailers even run on vegetable-based oil hydraulics.

Our entire decking portfolio – Trex Transcend, Trex Enhance and Trex Select – is made from more than 95% recycled and reclaimed materials, an achievement confirmed through the International Code Council Evaluation Service® SAVE Verification for Recycled Content. In fact, we were the first company in the wood-alternative decking category to receive such distinction.

But our efforts don't end there. Trex advocates recycling initiatives and environmental education. Our Plastic Film Challenge encourages schools and communities to collect plastic bags in return for benches and birdhouses made of our wood-alternative materials. Last year, 66 benches were awarded to winning schools that collected 170,135 pounds of plastic film. That’s approximately 12,760,146 grocery bags put to better use making Trex decking!

Trex also works with many local and national recycling groups and trade associations to encourage recycling. These include the American Chemistry Council’s Flexible Film Recycling Group, Society of the Plastics Industry, Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers and the Sustainable Packaging Coalition.
